Dengue fever is one of the common causes of morbidity of late caused by the smallest pest we usually live with here in the tropics, the mosquito. Characterized by high fever and chills with frontal headaches, it sometimes is diagnosed as ordinary flu until further symptoms are observes like malaise, anorexia, ocular pain, severe backache, nauseas, vomiting, mild pharyngitis and rashes.
Be informed that dehydration should be managed right away due to vomiting. Patient is at high risk thus it is optimum to rehydrate as soon as possible by intravenous fluid and increased intake of water and juices to replace fluid and electrolyte loss. Due to this vomiting, it is advisable to avoid giving fatty foods and may help alleviating urge with hard candies, Jell-O’s or plain ice drops/ice chips. Antipyretic drugs are given for fever and with it are liquid to soft HIGH CALORIC foods. High caloric in lay man’s language is food not in bulk but is highly nutritious. Feeling of fullness or when bloated will add up to the urge to vomit.
What I hate most is the blood extraction and transfusion needs of patient especially children. Again, PREVENTION RATHER THAN CURE comes to mind! Therefore, have clean and safe environment at all times to avoid these dengue infested mosquitos from camping within your vicinity. Mosquito repellants are encouraged when you are in unknown areas.
I suffered from Dengue fever twice when I was a teenager. Hopefully we get to inform everyone about the right ways and means of prevention so no one gets to suffer from this deadly disease. Two thumbs up on your post my friend.
