In the older days when you think of hospitals you see WHITE. The pale, bland, colorless surroundings that makes you feel pale yourself. You see white walls, white or metal things, nurses in white uniform and white caps, doctors in white coats. It almost looks ghostly, it looks like heaven. The only color you see in your minds eye is a red cross. And this may be one factor why people try to avoid going to hospitals before and seeing one does not give one a nice feeling...in fact it leaves an uneasy feeling of death close by.
Then came a different impression of hospitals. It became a health care institution that gives solution to probable hindrances to healthiness, it became the icon for good health. Thus the change also in visual perception. The traditional white have changed to inviting array of colors. The most that warrants notice is the wonderful change in the nursing uniforms. They are looking more upbeat, not stiff, prim and proper like a school teacher. Plus the fact that the administration get to give an assigned color in every unit for better identification or classification. More so, in the part of the medical team, they are more comfortable. The unrestricted movements allowed with wearing scrubs do make them hesitate to leap up the gurney to do CPR's if needed, crawl under emergency wreckage, or even simple reach here and there. Even the very cloth of non-absorbent white, starched uniforms cannot compare to the all cotton scrubs. Mind you, nurses and non-nurses alike can benefit from wearing scrubs. Doctors, technicians...private practitioners even. I have appreciated once when I went to have my teeth checked and found the one attending me wearing dental uniform. That is a first, because in the recent years, its always civilian clothes over lab gowns that flops open with each movement. Looks like a hindrance to their movements if you ask me. But with scrubs, she looked neat, clean, professional and freely moving as she thoroughly cleansed my teeth.
