Next to oxygen, we need water to live! 10% deprivation of it will make you ill and 20% leads to death, simply because 60-70% of our total body weight comprises of water. In a normal adult, 45 liters can be found; 2/3 is within the cells and 1/3 is outside the cells. What it does for us? It carries all needed substances for proper functioning and nourishment that transports all throughout our system. It also is the way to excrete waste products from the lungs, skin and kidneys. Water is vital for bodily chemical and biological reactions like in digestion, absorption and circulation.
The Recommended intake is 1 ml. per calorie; 1.5 – 2.5 liters per day (6-10 glasses). H. Guthrie of the Introductory Nutrition suggests 22-38ml/kg for adults depending on environmental temperature.
