This may sound to be more of a home need, but this GOOD HOUSEKEEPING is more apt to be used in the work environment. It is a systematic approach good housekeeping. It helps in improving workplace as it promotes QUALITY, SAFETY, PRODUCTIVITY, and CLEAN ENVIRONMENT.
You probably noticed the 5 non-english words above. They are Japanese words. Yes, Japanese because 5S originated in Japan. And these 5 concepts are very popular in Japanese companies because with 5S their offices are clean and well-organized that which makes it safer to work at and makes it easier for every employee to do their work. It therefore is also a reason for the workers to be motivated. Japanese recognizes its powerful contribution to productivity and quality improvement.
SORT out what is needed and not needed. Discard whatever is not necessarily in the work place. Clear the place.
SET IN ORDER every little thing that is being used. Arrange them accordingly. Consider the ergonomics. Man versus machine locations. The safety of the people should definitely NOT be overlooked.
SHINE the place next to being speak and span. Remember "cleanliness is next to Godliness." Clean the place.
STANDARDIZE by designating appropriate places for everything. Put back where it is suppose to be found and not anywhere else.
SUSTAIN THE SELF DISCIPLINE and not wait for others to reprimand you. Live by example and train others to do so as well.
