One of the pleasing characteristic of a Filipino family is the closeness within the home. So much so that it is normal to see children of parents in their old age is still under their wings though way into the age of adulthood. It is in fact a talk of the clan if and when a child is independent enough to live on his or her own and decides to move out. It’s never a question of capability; it is your love for your family to stay together until you get married. As I have said earlier, even married children sometimes prefer staying with the family.
And it works both ways, the children repaying the care their parents gave them by this time caring for them now that they are in their needy stage; and the parents not ever wanting to let go of the kid they raised plus enjoying to witness the raising of their grandchildren.
It may not be believable for other countries not practicing the same tradition, they may not understand it much…but old fashioned Filipino’s are pleased with this kind of arrangement. Some who had acquired other cultures do not go with this set-up anymore, but the weekly visit to the parents continues on.
