More often than not, when I go to a drug store and while waiting in line I will hear of someone saying “Generic of this drug please”.
But not everyone is complacent with this GENERIC. My dad for one, still prefers branded ones saying “...to be sure”. He believes that branded ones are more effective than generics. I myself have personal experience to this CHOICE OF BRANDED OVER GENERIC. I have proven time and again that my headache never goes away with just any Mefenamic Acid. I need to take Ponstan (which is a branded name to a Mefenamic acid) to truly get rid of it. Still, there were some generics that work as well as any branded ones; anti-motility for one.
It is fortunate that I came across articles regarding Generic Drugs and as to some differences it has with branded ones. I was led to believe before that Generics are specifically made to be just generics; another brand of a certain medication that will be sold at a lower price. It has just been recently differentiated that Generics are branded ones that is past its patent date. That the company who has been originally the distributor has let go of its right to the said medication.
For me, advantages outweigh disadvantages. Generic are a lot cheaper and most works the same as any branded. In the same way, only one among the branded medicines have I proven to be more effective than generic and that they are really a lot more expensive just because they carry a certain name. And so, I’m glad that there is now a law on drug prescriptions given by medical practitioners; that whenever they prescribe medicine to patients, it should be written in Generic with an option to put a Branded name enclosed in parenthesis under serving as an advise and not a must.
