In my diet instructions, I include the advice of reading food labels whenever a food is to be purchased. There you will see what you will be partaking. Take for example the fat content. Be reminded that saturated fat is the culprit to heart problems, it being the bad fat. And so, if you notice in a label they most usually include total fat then saturated fat, so it will be distinguishable how much of the bad fat it contains. Another is the Sodium content. Since sodium is being used as preservative as well, you will positively find them high in canned and preserved items. It is noted there for the buyers to at least know where it stands in their 2-6gm daily allowance, depending on their body needs. It is advisable to consume less for those with clinical manifestations of hypertension and heart problems, and those with edema and kidney problems. Consulting dietitians is a must, just as consulting a medical practitioner.

How safe?

I had a mother to mother chat with my friend, Lissa. She has a 2 year and a half toddler that she leaves behind to a babysitter. Both she and her hubby go to work and have no relative to fill-in while they’re out 9-10 hours each day. She shared her worries in entrusting her baby to someone she doesn’t really know…apart from the 2 month training period. Not that the caregiver is not trustworthy…it’s just that the world is now filled with the evilness that makes you worry to the extreme if you’re one of the unlucky ones to be a victim of kidnapping or incompetency leading to having your child get hurt, if not dying.

The media covers different stories of such and it makes a parent more uneasy of what may happen to their children when they’re not within arms reach. It is difficult to ease up knowing things like this happen…but then again, what can we do?!

One thing we can…entrust everything else to the Lord! Because we really cannot tell what is bound to happen…if it is His will. Of course we do our part doing background checks, proper training and instructions and continuous follow-ups.

I am so spoiled to my parents when it comes to having a helper in raising my 3 year old daughter. I just can’t think of doing so without it…but then again, who am I to say no when they’re the one who insists to provide me with.

Now, It is a challenge for me to be left home alone with my Anya for 4 days because my househelp is on vacation! Her requested birthday vacation leave, and she prefers to celebrate it with her family in the province.

I need not point this out, but clearly, my God has given me the best parents one could ever ask for. That if they can provide, they give it to me and my sibs. To the point of giving even what they were to consume, if we need it. We always come first! And that trait we acquired…for the love of our family!

4 days to go…and I’ll be another year older…argh!!!

If years ago I get the so-called birthday blues, not this time. Because now everyday of my life I am so happy and thankful for what I have, for what I am…for everything that is given me. Everyday of my life is a gift. And all these blessings that I have…my daughter, my family…is a living proof of how I am loved by God. That every waking moment, there is hope for more to come; every night before I sleep, I was given what others lack in their lives.

I am blessed. And I offer my all to Him who gives them, I lay down my life in pleasing Him who has been taking me back whenever I falter and goes back to Him.
Total surrendering my life to Him makes life easier to deal with. And contentment settles when there is acceptance of fate. And so…there’s no space left for me to get the blues (though I have my share of trials and difficulties)…because now I’m awfully glad I get to have another birthday, and having lived my 33 years on earth loving and being loved.

It’s guaranteed effective…try it!=)

Yes it’s a day to celebrate, but in our family it’s like any other day. There are greetings but it ends there. That’s how it is with us, we don’t give much weight to occasions such us this. Even birthdays lately. We just make it a point that the family is complete. Just as the famous line that ”birthdays are for kids!”

But this doesn’t mean that we love the celebrant less! Maybe it’s the understanding that we don’t need a certain day to show our love for each other…because we can do it everyday.

My health buff bro, a nurse-dietitian and have once been a gym instructor, loves “inihaw” (grilled) and even the very act of grilling. I myself prefer them than the fried, oily ones…but not the doing-so using charcoals. I find it too much of a task…to start a fire, to continuously fan it, and to be in suffocated under the clouds of smoke (though honestly, our griller is almost smoke-free, haha!)

Presently, bro’s there outside enjoying the grilling, and later I’ll be enjoying the eating=). But mind you, I did my share of work with the preparation of everything else. Whenever he’s home and there’s something to grill, pork chops, spare ribs, chicken, fish, eggplant, hotdogs…he gratefully volunteers to do so. That means…no cooking for me today!!! Yipeee!!!

Lying is one of those unlikable traits. We don’t like being lied to…but why is it that we ourselves do so? There are different forms actually…but I just differentiate them into two, in my own terms, okay?!. One is the positive-advantageous and the other negative-deceitful.

Positive-advantageous because we do this to please people, to save them from embarrassment or to avoid hurting (most people call them white lies). Like commenting on a “nice hair” just because it’s a new hair-do and we know it will make her day. Or when we assure someone we’re fine though the movie she suggested is totally so boring us but cannot voice it out just to avoid hurting her. Things like such is too petty to cause trouble. Unlike the Negative-deceitful that is exasperatingly affecting. Like when it misleads to something else or when it covers up what should be laid down instead.

It annoys me more to be lied to than to be told of the truth no matter how infuriating the truth is. Because dishonesty and deceit makes me feel dumb, stupid and empty-headed!

I’ve learned to see signs of it from dealing with people around me; from staffs under me, colleagues, even friends and relatives. Maybe I really should have pursued being a Psychologist, I considered taking that for College.

Men, in particular opened my eyes to this lying stuff. They’re really good at it…but then again, they’re just people who cannot control what may happen for you to find out. And constant repetition made me well-versed with detecting telltale signs!

Want some tip-offs? Sure you do!

They avoid eye contact as if detaching himself from you so it’ll be easier for them to deceive you; their hands go to parts of their bodies mostly the mouth as if trying not to spill-out the lies; you’ll notice them blinking more than the said average of 4-5 per minute which obviously indicates stress thus sometimes they even break into sweats; I also recall reading in a police story once that sudden nose and a 5-stroke neck itch is also a clue like producing a blush because it’s both caused by rush of blood that may have been set off by high pulse rate (nervous?!); most men I’ve observed sniffs, and upon further research have related it to an unconscious method of getting more oxygen of the body to the brain for an additional effort of coming up with a lie.
Think about it…and you’ll agree with me that you’ve seen these signs when you or someone is in the hot-seat! Maybe you can contribute more? Some I’ve missed?

You just got to admit it’s so hard to get a job these days, especially here in the Philippines! And I’m truly proud of my big bro who got a job directly in connected to his profession. He is now a hospital nurse. No one can know him better than his family, us, and I can tell you…he’s really good at it!

The hospital and its patients were so lucky to have a devoted and pure-hearted employee such as him. He also is capable, proven many times already, when he got paid-trainings in other hospitals (only if they have a vacant slot to their filled in positions right away they definitely have hired him and not put on a waiting list till a staff decided to leave). That’s how it is here since that nursing need boomed a few years back…everyone decided to take nursing! Good for my bro, he’s a double-degree holder, being a licensed dietitian as well. This hospital saw that and grabbed the opportunity for such achievement.

I love my bro dearly, and I’m so happy for him.

Perhaps you’ve noticed my long absence…I’ve had problems with my internet connection for the past weekend. Since connection of our DSL, bills have gotten so confusing with the inaccuracies by the PLDT branch near our place. In fact we have been getting in touch with the main branch since this provincial one seems to be lacking in competence (as per our evaluation of their capability!) There have been miscalculations and mistakes that may have confused them with the shift in ordinary line to DSL internet connection. Yet, even with their communication to the Main Branch…slip-ups still occurs. It’s actually a recurring problem that makes me lose my patience, especially when this happens…when they cut my connection and I can’t continue with my postings!!!

Truthfully, now I’m writing this in my notepad and I’m not sure if they will go with their word of reconnecting today (half the day have passed already to my exasperation!!!) Whew! I’m not sure if it’s just us experiencing this…because according to friends (whose in the city), they’re not having problems with their PLDT DSL connections.

The fast pace in life makes us think less and less of our health. We strive harder each day to earn a living. We do overtimes, sometimes even double jobs, just so we can give our family the best we can offer. But by doing so, we have less time sleeping, we grab bites to eat that is not really nutritious but filling, we even delay calls of nature at times. We forget that HEALTH IS WEALTH. And nutrition is one way to good health.

Do you still have a chance to eat balanced meal? Are you taking in nutritious food that compensates body expenditure? Do you even have vitamin supplements especially when you admit that you have minimal intake of the needed nutrients from items you eat at fast-food?

Now your back hurts. You believe it is mere stress from work. Probably just because you stayed overly long hours sitting down doing paper works. Have you ever thought that maybe you do not have calcium enough to support your bones? You rather drink coffee than milk, you are breastfeeding, you are more indoors than outdoors, you are taking steroidal drugs, and all those other factors why you have minimal calcium stores.

"OSTEOPOROSIS is the thinning of the bones with reduction in bone mass due to depletion of calcium" as per defined by MedicineNet.com. And with weak, porous bones, it cannot support your weight as it does before therefore your muscles give more effort making your back hurt.

GIVE TIME TO KNOW. Seek medical consult if you have back pains before it is too late. People with osteoporosis are at high risk to fractures since the bones can break easily. And this may pose a greater problem than osteoporosis itself. Bone Density Test can tell if you have osteoporosis. And if you do, your Doctor and Dietitian can give the appropriate diet and medicine to help make your bones stronger and back less painful.

I’ve been using baby bags since my li’l one came into this world…but not something as extra-ordinarily fashionable as this Baby Diaper Bag I now have from Baby Couture .

It’s a mommy’s chic shoulder bag and a baby bag in one. They have varying trendy styles that much up your activities…at the same time conveniently carrying together you baby’s needs.

Mine’s Cassidy, a stripped outdoor style tote that have bottle holders inside. Interior lining is water resistant, so does the matching diaper changing pad, and wet wipes carrier.

I find the bag convenient that instead of carrying my kids’ things in another, and mine on my own…it’s all in organized in one nice-looking bag in disguise.

Suits me…try and look what best agree with you in their store nearest you. I myself is hoping to get more!

It’s sad to see husbands and wives go their separate ways. The vows they have once uttered in the holy matrimony easily forgotten when they go through rough roads and tough times.…believing that they’ve reached the limit and there’s nothing else that can be done. What’s more gloomy is the effect it does to their children. There were some who needs to choose whether to stay with their mother or their father. Some who even were left behind to stay with other people.

This is actually the mere product of the society’s acceptance of such fate; that there are others doing such separations, divorces, and annulments...so why not do so, too? Suddenly, couples who used to try to make it work gives up saying “there’s no other choice”. But the fact is they have a choice. They should have a choice. They just have to try harder, if not for themselves, at least for the kids. And better yet, for our God who commands for us to stick together once we shared the vows.

It’s just a matter of “total giving of ourselves”, and the acceptance that the couple is considered as one body, not two that can go another way. BOTH should think as such. BOTH should selflessly love.

Our family loves the television. Using it as relaxant, entertainment and time-passing-tool…but no matter how nice the unit is, it still is nothing without the satellite cable that gives you variety of channels from all over the world.

Our preferences vary though. There are those who like the sports channel, lifestyle, cartoons, movies, religion…and the local ones, too, that’s made clearer. Still, not all providers offer the same set of channels. And not all providers are good with handling billing arrangements…such as the case with the present one we have. And that’s the main reason we’re hoping to change to the one my gramps is using in manila.

DESTINY cable gives them no headaches to the advance payments, and interweaving charges and bills. This provider also serves the subscribers networks that are remarkably pleasing. We’re really planning to shift to this network provider…I hope they have line connection here in our place, too!

If before we frequent the malls, now we avoid it at all cost.

All because of the worldwide spread of the virus of the millennium, A(H1N1) virus. It’s sad to hear that it has infiltrated our country as well. All precautionary methods that can be implemented is being implemented by the government. Some non-government sectors helps in avoiding further increase of subjects infected by the virus. Quarantine is necessary…but I think, the people also must cooperate.

It is unfortunate that A(H1N1) started the spread in time that summer vacation ended. Now school vacation are being extended for precaution. Some even started already but was found to have students contaminated already. I’m awfully glad Anya’s not going to school yet.

Alarming as it may seem, I trust the Lord to spare my family. Even our country, I believe, is blessed since those infected, though increasing, recovers easily. And they were just mild cases, and so most were already discharged from the hospital. But we must also do our part by being careful. And the best method is to stay away from crowded places…to stay away from the malls!

Since childhood, we’ve been taught by our elders to say “I’m sorry” each time we did something that we shouldn’t have done, or if we unintentional hurt a playmate. And we were able to grow with it. We learned to humble ourselves ask for forgiveness for any wrong doing.

But why is it that the reciprocal of that sorry, which is the “it’s okay” wasn’t as commonly used word as the “I’m sorry”? Why is it that we can easily apologize but not as easily forgive…when it is as important as the other?

Yes, it both gives us stress over an unforgiven incident and unaccepted apology. Why be one-sided?! I believe the “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others do unto you!” and this definitely applies here!

Well, maybe kids are better in learning such things than us…since we know, we just don’t want to acknowledge that we know.

GEM for me is a chance given to other people to know the truth. And each and every time, it gives me the feeling of happiness to see guests giving themselves the chance to see and hear God’s calling. We have these GEMs often, and I see to it that I am there to celebrate that day with my brethrens.

I did! Yeah, I've been monitoring since I gave birth...and I lost a total of 15lbs already. But every now and then, I gain back 5 to 10. Whenever I go back to being the "rice eater" I really am. And when I say I eat rice, I really eat rice! 2cups of rice (oops!)

These last few months...I've been good. Control is the key! Now, I'm into maintenance. In my other blog I posted "Wanna Have French Chic Bod" ...and somehow following Vittoria's, a new friend, advice.

Parents were given full responsibility by our God to ensure that their children develop faith and grow spiritually. It is therefore not proper to pass that role to their school teachers and caretakers. We are the ones to introduce holiness within the family. Our responsibility is beyond provision of financial needs and proper education. We are to “bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Eph 6:4).

In doing so, not only will we please our Lord God by following His wishes, but this will provide great benefit to our children and our family. We very well know how many families are burdened these days with delinquent children. Alcoholism, drug abuse and early pregnancies are few of those family problems we see in our society. High rate of broken families also are commonly heard of, and is rapidly increasing. Such sad occurrences were what we fear for our own family to go through…and we can avoid them by ensuring that we have a strong foundation that will bind our family to keeping standing still. How else can we do that than by being obedient to His commandments written in the Holy Scripture. These will be our guide to the right way of living to steer us, and our children to the life we dream of.

Let us then be deligent in teaching our children of God’s words. When? ALL THE TIME! We need to give them quality time, the so-called “bonding time” or “family hour”. Talk to them, share with them our life experiences. How we dealt with problems, miseries, happy times…. We need to be in constant watch, be aware of their activities and companions. It’s not spying, but making sure that they are not being misled while we’re not looking.

And we need to start the teaching early on, not when they’re already formed into imperfection. It’ll be a lot harder to straighten a bended branch than guiding it with a stick as it grows. As was said, “so that when they grow old they will never depart from them” (Prov. 22:6).

In relation to this, our children need to see the best of example, and us being their heroes, we need to be the role model. We cannot expect them to do what we ourselves do not do.

We don’t always need to go big…and whenever you are yet to start, start small.

Just like our very first family business. My mom decided she’s tired of being a government employee after more than two decades of serving as such. Gone were the days of going to work for a boss…then AS a boss; of waking up with the same routine everyday; or of all those paper works to assess and sign.

She decided to have an early retirement and tried with the food business, and started out with a food cart that’s very much in demand lately. Hers is the fried noodles, dumplings and dimsum combination.

It’s a small business that I believe will go big after just a week. The products were really tasty, the location is good and the profit is remarkable!

I know this is not just because my mom’s good at it…but also because it is all made possible by the heavens.

This phrase has been goin’ for a couple of years already. It has been passed from generation to generation. And not only to kids…even to adults. Sad part is, it’s not always true!

Yes, it’s loaded with vitamins and minerals, but so are other fruits. Infact, some are even better.
In potassium level: Apple 148 mg.
Banana 422 mg.
Mango 323 mg.

In vitamin c level: Apple 8mg.
Guava 165mg.
Mango 57mg
Banana 11mg.

In fiber content: Apple 4gm
Mango 4.5 gm
Therefore, apple is good but not just apple actually. Many other fruits can be used for this phrase as well, like "A banana a day keeps the doctor away". Perhaps this fruit is used because everyone knows what this fruit is. From north to south, east to west...THEY KNOW APPLE! But consuming one per day of this fruit may not be good for you just as it was for me...if you're the constipated sort.
Then again, it seemed to have worked for others!

Distant relatives from our family’s provincial hometown, Batangas, came over last weekend for a visit. A jeepney-full of relatives actually, most of which I know from childhood summer visits to our long-ago rest house there, near Taal Lake.

With them are products of my gramps and his sibs’ trees they take care of on their younger days. And one of my favorites is among them, AVOCADO’S! If you haven’t tried it…you’re missing half of your life! It tastes really good, either being a shake, or a frozen dessert (Mash it and mix with condensed milk or powdered milk and sugar…slurp!).

I know it is rich in Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Potassium and Fiber…still, I believe it to have more than that. And so clicked the google search and within minutes found out that it also contain large amounts of folate pregnant mothers need to reduce incidence of birth defects in infants.

I also came across a study by a professor in the University of Shiznoka Japan imparting that avocado seem to improve liver health and slows down liver damage, “It’s components inhibits galactosamine from interfering with the normal activity of healthy cells in the liver, and are somehow responsible for preventing the toxin from working”.
Please be reminded though that we always bear in mind that AVOCADO IS A FAT! Yes, not a fruit! It is a good fat, but EVERYTHING IN EXCESS IS NOT GOOD. And so--consume in moderation.

Different religions and sects from different areas were popping out as fast as entrepreneurs putting up businesses. Each of them may have different views, and even beliefs…but it all boils down to one fact—they all use The Bible!

It is the means to finding the truth. It is where the path leads to Life. It is God’s words through His chosen apostles.

Unfortunately, not everyone is guided by the Holy Spirit to interpret this holy book, to be able to see the simplest message from the heavens. Moreso, fake prophets even made use of their own bibles. Or if not, they use misleading translations when it was all there already in the all too basic interpretations. If only people would follow God’s commandment of not adding or taking away even a single period from His mighty words!?

Try to picture yourself in a kitchen in the days of our ancestors…about a few hundred years back. You see native clay pots instead of non-stick pans, you see chopped wood and fire instead of ranges and ovens…you see fresh herbs and spices and not bottled, preserved or powdered seasonings.

Some people still use these greens, but most don’t. The reasons being: first, unavailability since backyard gardening has long been foregone, and not all nearby stores have them. Not all groceries have them, or if they do, just a few of it. As for the wet market, only the big one does, and just the common ones (like leeks and celery). And the most often source of many Filipino’s, small markets we call “talipapa”, from “sari-sari stores” and “tindahan”, they definitely do not have them, since shelf life of these fresh herbs are way too short as compared to the artificial seasonings. These are MSG (monosodium glutamate) containing preserves that people knows to put you on high risk to cancer, but still includes in their cooking.

Second reason for not using herbs is because it is more costly to use the fresh ones than a sachet or a pack of the millennium flavorings.

Third, not everybody knows how and when to use them. This change of heart didn’t just happen overnight. That every generation of our ancestors, they each brought a little of that knowledge to their graves…until it were almost all gone and forgotten.
